The reserve is located near the banks of the Danube, 16 km from Silistra. The territory of the reserve covers Silver Lake and the lands around it. The lake is famous for the unique variety of waterfowl that inhabit it, and that is part of Via Pontica - one of the main routes of migratory birds from Europe to Africa. In 1942 the lake has become a breeding ground for waterfowl, and several years later declared a bird sanctuary. One of the most interesting species inhabiting the lake are the Dalmatian pelican, lesser white-fronted goose, bearded tit, mute swan and others.
Silver Lake hosts many endangered and rare species of birds, because that is part of the list of sites of World Heritage by UNESCO. In addition to rare species of creatures Lake "Silver" will impress you with its interesting vegetation. Floating reed islands or kochki as they are called local, sinking islands are not moving vertically along the water, making them ideal for nesting birds inhabiting the lake. The biosphere reserve "Silver" is listed with the most important wetlands in Europe, and participant in an international agreement on biodiversity conservation has been declared as a wetland under the Ramsar Convention and is also included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves Programme of UNESCO "Man and Biosphere".
