Central Church Historical and Archaeological Museum is located in the building of the Theological Faculty of the University "St. Kliment Ohridski ", Square" Holy Sunday "in the capital. Author of the project for this beautiful building constructed in the style of the architectural tradition of the era of the Second Bulgarian State, is architect. Gruenanger. Its facade was painted by Professor Nicholas Ganushev with portraits of Bulgarian clergymen, educators and Revival, designed by Prof. Haralampi Tachev.
The collection of manuscripts, books, icons, plates and archival materials began after the Liberation, by order of the Holy Synod. In 1900, first published 157 manuscripts collected in the synodal library, and in 1922 synodal gathering gets official status of the museum. Its first director (until 1959) is an academician Prof. reg. I. Goshev who earnestly occupied with collecting and handling of museum materials.
The museum is divided four divisions: iconographic, Manuscripts and Old Books, Art, Industrial and Historical Archive, an extremely rich and interesting collections.
In iconographic department of the museum are arranged icons from the Middle Ages, of the Second Bulgarian Empire, the period of Ottoman rule and the Renaissance. Pride of the museum is its oldest icon - bas-relief icon of Sozopol - "St. George and St. Demetrius' horses of X - XI century An interesting fact, which is followed in the collections of icons is that during the period of Ottoman rule, Bulgarian painters began to sign icons. This shows their high self-esteem and confidence. In iconographic department of the museum are preserved icons "St. Vehtozavetna Trinity "of Nedelcho Zograf of Lovech (1598)," Transfiguration "Panayot Zograf (1715) and many others. etc.. Are preserved and unsigned icons Zachary Zograf - these are the icons "St. Trifon "and" Christ great bishop "(carving frame) - from Plovdiv. Bookmarks are also two portraits of the same era - Bishop Sophronius of Vratsa (of 1812) and Metropolitan of Plovdiv Paisii (since 1872).
The Division Manuscripts and printed books are stored more than one thousand five hundred specimens. Manuscripts from the X-XIV century are on parchment, and the following paper. Many manuscripts are decorated with unique figural miniatures, among them Slepchenskoto Gospel of XV century, three written and decorated by pop Ivan Kratovo Gospels of 1563, 1567 and 1579, and many other Gospels of XVI and XVII century great interest and collection-panegerik from 1435 to Dyak Andrew, who was a disciple of St. Evtimiy Tarnovsky.
Rich is the collection and the art-industrial department of the museum. It includes old clothes, linen, plates, metallic and pearl icons, reliquary, crosses with filigree and enamel, with crosses carved miniature Mount Athos; diptisi triptisi and some of the Gospels with a rare hardware and more.
More than 140 documents - manuscripts and letters are kept in the Historical Records Department of the museum. Among them are manuscripts of Father Neophyte Bozveli, Bishop Ilarion, ekzarsite Antim I and Joseph I, Archbishop Kliment of Turnovo (Vasil Drumev) and others.
