History of the National Museum of Natural History began only 12 years after the liberation of the country from Ottoman rule - in 1889, when King Ferdinand established the Prince's Natural History Museum. This comes just a year after the idea of the prince in Sofia was established and the first zoo in the Balkans. Originally the museum was storing personal collections of the Prince, and Dr. Paul Leverkühn (court doctor) was its first director.
Between 1914-1959, when the museum director is Dr. Ivan Buresh, are organized expeditions to all Bulgarian mountains to enrich museum collections and the museum became a center of natural history studies in the country. At that time, and began issuing authoritative scientific journal. In 1936 in the city center was built a special four-storey building in which to be exposed to museum collections. During the bombing of the capital, the building was destroyed but the museum exhibits were evacuated and saved, and then again at war in the renovated building.
In 1947 re-organization of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the museum is named subdivision Natural History Museum. This is a period of stagnation in the development of the museum, which lasted until 1974 when its director was Academician Ivan Kostov. He manages to earn himself the status of a national museum and turns it back on its own research institute.
Today NTC develops research and development in the study of minerals and rocks of Bulgaria, its flora and fauna, and the remains of prehistoric times. Parallel and develop museum activity enrichment of museum funds and maintenance of those collections as the museum does not neglect its educational functions - in the halls he held many exhibitions, organizing seminars for students and pupils.
In 1990 in the town is created subsidiary of NTC, which are exposed skeletons of mastodons, hipparions, antelope, saber-toothed tiger and more. And cast skeleton Deinotherium (huge dinosaur) with impressive size - length of 6 m and a height of 4.5 meters.
