Kozarnika cave around Belogradchik. There, in the late 90s of the twentieth century began archaeological studies. At the beginning it means that the excavations are sensational because it found traces of human presence from 1 to 1.4 million years ago. The inhabitants of Kozarnika made tools from flint and bone. Together with them, archaeologists found many bones of a rhinoceros, wild horse, mammoth, which were hunted by prehistoric people. They found more bones of saber-toothed tiger, archaic species of hyenas, cave bear, who were killed in self-defense. By this time there was no evidence for the existence of these animals on our land.
Kozarnika is a small cave, with a length of about 200 meters. It is one of the most important prehistoric sites in Europe and Bulgaria. From 1998 until today have a look at the Bulgarian-French expedition, whose rakovodoteli are Bulgarian archaeologist Nikolay Sirakov and French Jacques Luc Guadelli. Finds evidence of the earliest human presence in Europe. On this basis and make conclusions that the Balkans began settling in Europe.
