Silistra has a rich history from ancient times. The town was founded during the Roman Empire, the lands of today's city was hosting the prestigious Legion of Claudius, which makes the city was declared self-governing Roman city. The ancient name of the city Durostorum main objective of the settlement was guarding the frontier of the Roman Empire. At the time of the First Bulgarian Kingdom the town was called Drustar. Here was located the Danube Palace known as the palace of the Bulgarian khans. And during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom the town was bishop's residence and the capital during the reign of Tsar Todor Svetoslav Terter.
The rich history of this ancient city is stored in the Regional History Museum. Here are unique finds us acquainted with the Roman and medieval Bulgarian culture. The museum presents two exhibitions Archaeological and Ethnographic. Hosted archeology exhibition building was built in the 19th century, where there are about 42 000 exhibits. Here you can learn about the prehistoric, ancient and medieval times reflected in the unique exhibits: treasures from the Roman period and Middle Ages, coin collections, gold jewelry of the early Christians and princesses. You can see the funeral of a noble Roman chariot judge of the 3rd century, and one of the richest collections of medieval crosses from 10-13 century. The museum has a rich ethnographic collection representing our life and lifestyle of the local population between 19-20 century exhibition presents the tools, household items, clothing and mummers' masks. You can see the costumes of the now-defunct local population grebentsi-lived there until the mid 19th century
